Cendere Bridge
Cendere Bridge, also known as Severan Bridge or Septimius Severus Bridge, is located on the Ancient Cabinas (Cendere) Stream. The bridge connects the two sides of the stream flowing through an awe-inspiring canyon. It is located at the Sincik-Kocahisar junction on the way from the Kahta district to Mount Nemrut, approximately 10 kilometers from the Karakuş Tumulus. The bridge was rebuilt by the Legio XVI Gallica garrisoned in the ancient city of Samosata by the order of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211).
Cendere Bridge is a monumental piece of Ancient Roman architecture. Consisting of one main arch and one drainage arch, the bridge is made of dimension stones, each weighing many tons. While the bridge is 7 meters wide, 30 meters high and 120 meters long, its most significant architectural feature is that it was built without mortar. The bridge rises on both sides like a ramp and merges in the middle, which increases the static strength of the bridge and gives it its monumental appearance.
