Ancient City Of Perrhe
Known as Me’arath Gazze Pörön in ancient literature and as Pirin or Perin in Mesopotamia, the Ancient City of Perrhe is one of the five big cities of the Kingdom of Commagene. It had geopolitical significance, as it was located on the road connecting Melitene (Malatya) to the capital Samosata (Samsat).
Known as Hierapolis (Holy City), the Ancient City of Perrhe attended the Biblical Council convened in Nicaea (Iznik) in 325 as a city of the Persidas state governed by Bishop Ioannes Perdos. In a letter to Alexander in 433, Andreas of Samosata (Samsat) mentions some of the important bishops in the Ancient City of Perrhe, which shows that the city also had religious significance. All the archeological findings to date show that the Ancient City of Perrhe was a city of both religious and geopolitical significance in antiquity.
