Generating 8,900 GWh of electricity annually and built at a cost of approximately US$ 1.25 billion, the dam is the centrepiece of the Southeastern Anatolia Project, known as GAP, a major, multifaceted economic development project that has rejuvenated irrigation in the region and contributed significantly to higher standards of living.
