The UNESCO World Heritage Site has been listed since 1994, but long before that it was an important place of trade, as the presence of three caravansaries (historic inns crucial to the flow of trade) and thousands of other historic buildings and artefacts attest. The city was and remains a noted producer of Turkish saffron, from which it derives its name.
